Traveling With an Infant on a Plane

!±8± Traveling With an Infant on a Plane

Travel, especially international travel, can be stressful enough but for someone with a new infant, taking an international flight can be especially daunting. Not to worry, however. Airlines know that many parents fly with their infants and therefore they do the best they can to accommodate their youngest passengers.

The first hurdle to traveling with an infant is the security check. Although airlines require all carry-on liquids to be in three ounce containers and held entirely in a one quart Ziploc bag, an exception is made for infant formula and breast milk. Parents are allowed to pack as much formula as they can fit in their carry-on luggage, however security check will generally be easier if the formula is divided into containers of three ounces or less. Other parents prefer to pack the formula dry and add water in-flight; just make sure it is pre-measured to avoid messes.

Families with small children are generally given extra time to board the plane, usually after the first and business class passengers but before the general economy class. Your stroller can be taken right up to the entrance of the plane. There you need to fold it and leave it for the crew to pack. It will be waiting for you after you exit the plane. Make sure you fold the stroller properly as the airline is not responsible for any damages caused by their employees folding your stroller for you.

Once you are on the plane, the most distressing part for your infant will most likely be during take-off and landing. The change in cabin pressure can hurt his ears. While an adult has the option of chewing gum, an infant can be best soothed by feeding or sucking on a pacifier during that time. Once the cabin pressure has settled, most infants, especially those under six months old, will be lulled by the noise of the plane's engines and may sleep through the entire flight. Some airlines will even provide small cribs that fasten to the wall of the plane just above your seat so you don't have to hold your infant the entire time.

Having an infant awake and crying on a plane is many a parent's worst nightmare. First, make sure that your baby's ear pressure has normalized. After that, the usual routine of feeding, burping or changing your baby can alleviate his crying just as it often does at home. If that doesn't work, the cabin crew is generally understanding of your need to pace up and down the aisle with your infant after the fasten seat belt light has been turned off. If you baby still won't stop crying, it is not your job to worry about the comfort of the other passengers. You've done everything you can, but sometimes babies just cry.

Both feeding and changing your baby can take place in your seat, especially if your baby is little enough. However, as most airplane bathrooms come with changing tables, it may be more polite to use them, especially when the diaper is very dirty. Breast feeding is allowed on planes; request a window seat or use an extra blanket for added privacy. If you have bottled breast milk or formula that needs to be heated up, have the attendant pour hot water in an air sickness bag and place your bottle in the bag. Check first to make sure the bag is plastic-lined so that it won't leak.

After your baby is fed, burped, changed and hopefully asleep, relax and enjoy the flight!

Discover How to Get Free Infant Supplies

!±8± Discover How to Get Free Infant Supplies

It can be unbelievably expensive to have a baby in this day and age; particularly with the economy doing so poorly. In addition to the hospital stay and doctors, you've got to have baby clothes and blankets, a crib, changing table, and other baby furniture, diapers, formula, baby bottles, high chair, and a car-seat among other things. These expenses can be a significant source of worry for expectant mom's, especially if your family has experienced a cut in income due to the bad economy. Let's be honest, your financial situation is the last thing that you want to be thinking about if you have a new baby on the way. But to ease your mind, there are many places to get free infant supplies, so, don't worry.

When we had our first baby, we were awfully Poor ( with a capital P ). And to make matters worse, we had no insurance. Putting cash away for the birth and delivery used up all of our savings. We were so poor that... oh, never mind, it wasn't a terribly good joke. Any way, we needed any sort of free infant supplies that we could find. We had no extra money at all. Fortunately, one of the baby formula companies was introducing a new formula and baby bottle and was looking for people to test the system. They supplied us with two dozen bottles, 400 bags ( to fit into the bottles ), and enough formula to last for six months. It was a much needed and much appreciated gift.

We learned about the program from our gynecologist. So if you are having some financial difficulties, talk to your gynecologist and ask if they know of any offers for free infant supplies or some free samples. Often, your OB/GYN doctor will have at least a few free infant supplies that they can provide. If your doctor doesn't offer them to you, ask them about it.

In addition, many hospitals give new parents a bag of baby products to take home. These bags are financed by baby formula companies like the people that make Similac and Enfamil. These goody bags contain free infant supplies like formula, diapers, diaper rash creams, baby bath soap, rattles and coupons for other free items.

Fill out forms in mags as well as on the internet. Parenting and pregnancy magazines are filled with offers for free baby stuff. Take full advantage of those free offers; the companies are happy to provide them. Around your baby's due date, you will get a package from the formula company containing your free samples. Even though baby formula lasts a particularly long time, check the expiration dates, just to be safe. Even if you breastfeed your baby, you may use the formula as a supplement and to make baby cereal when the baby gets a little older.

In addition, make sure the diaper companies know your due date so they can try to convince you to use their product. Many diaper companies will send you free samples. And, if you have checked on diaper prices, they are not cheap, so take advantage of it.

You can get free subscriptions to a number of baby magazines. Most companies will send out a year's worth of subscriptions for free. And make sure you check your mailbox for additional freebies . After having a baby, you will probably get a number of free offers from portrait studios. Then, you can use these free pictures as great gifts for grandparents, aunts and uncles.

In addition to the techniques described above, visit web sites of baby-product companies. There is very intense competition among these manufacturers and they always have great promotional programs for newborns. Visit as many sites as you can and sign up to their free infant supplies.

Similac Recall - Baby Formula

!±8± Similac Recall - Baby Formula

The makers of Similac baby formula, Abbott Laboratories Inc,is voluntarily recalling some of the lot numbers of their powdered varieties, because there is a 'very small possibility' that they could contain beetle larvae & small insect parts. Some beetles were found in the area of production of one of the manufacturing facilities that makes the powdered product. They don't think there is any immediate health risk for infants drinking this baby formula that might be contaminated. Gastrointestinal symptoms are some of the possible symptoms of eating recalled formula.
The Similac recall includes lots of:

* Similac powder product lines offered in plastic containers, including 1.38-lb, 1.45-lb and 2.12-lb containers

* Similac formula product lines offered in sizes such as 8-ounce, 12.4-ounce and 12.9-ounce cans

* Similac powder in 8-ounce sample cans that could have been given out in doctor's offices and hospitals

The recall does not affect the ready-to-feed or concentrated formula or any specialty baby formulas, such Similac Expert Care Alimentum or Similac Expert Care Neosure. Up to 5 million Similac-brand powder baby formulas that were sold in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Guam and some Caribbean countries may be affected by the recall.

You can call Abbott's consumer hotline at (800) 986-8850. You can return Recalled baby formula to Abbott. Abbott states: If you can't verify that your Similac variety hasn't been recalled and you believe it is safe, you might still want to buy a new container of Similar powdered formula, as long as the store has removed all the lots of recalled formula already, then temporarily switch to a small size powder (0.6-oz singles), ready-to-feed, or concentrated Similac, or temporarily switch to another brand of formula.

Choosing Baby Formula to Supplement Breast Milk

!±8± Choosing Baby Formula to Supplement Breast Milk

For some new mothers, breast feeding is a challenge and in some cases, it can seem to be almost impossible. Stress, illness and previous surgeries are just a few of the reasons that a new mother may under-produce breast milk. If you have recently given birth and discover that, in spite of your best efforts, you are not producing enough breast milk, you should talk to your pediatrician about supplementing your breastfeeding with baby formula. It can be a bitter pill but if, like me, you find that your baby is still hungry at the end of a feeding, deciding to supplement is actually a complete no-brainer.

If your baby is not showing any obvious signs of allergies or sensitivities (gas, diarrhea and the like) you can start with any cow's milk based brand that appeals to you. Remember that all formulas sold in the US are governed by the FDA so you can be sure the nutrition guidelines are similar from brand to brand. Similac, Enfamil, Nestle or (and I wish this had been available when I was supplementing my baby) organic brands like Horizon are all fine places to start. We used powdered formula and bottles with disposable inserts for mixing but you can also buy formula in super convenient ready to use bottles and concentrated liquid formulas that you can mix quickly with water. Obviously, work within your economics and hectic schedule but once your baby is established on formula, you can switch between these different types as you need to.

Once you pick a formula, it won't take long to see if your baby doesn't like it or if it doesn't agree with her system. She will tell you unequivocally with fussing, crying, turning her head away from the bottle, spitting up, vomiting or with some truly awful diapers and gas. Definitely consult your doctor on this but you may need to switch to a formula with low or no lactose or one made with soy milk. In any case, never, ever attempt to feed your baby regular cow's milk or soy milk... they are simply not nutritionally complete enough for a developing baby.

If you can, you should definitely continue to let your baby breastfeed before offering a bottle. For me, it worked something like this: I would make up a bottle first, then sit down with my baby to breast feed. When he lost interest in breastfeeding, I would offer him the bottle and, if he took it right away, I would let him drink as much of that bottle as he wanted. Be aware that sucking formula from a bottle is so much easier than getting it from your breast that your baby might become "lazy" about breastfeeding so always breastfeed first and be absolutely sure they are making an effort before you offer the bottle.

Finally, how do you know if your baby is getting enough formula? Not surprisingly, you will know if you are feeding your baby enough formula by looking for the same signs of satiation that you do with breast feeding: sleepiness, falling off the bottle and what every mother might call slight "intoxication."

In the end, the very best thing you can do is trust your instincts and not worry too much, anyway. After all, we're talking about our babies!

Postpartum Checkup

!±8± Postpartum Checkup

You will probably have an appointment for a checkup 4 to 6 weeks after delivery to make sure your body is healing without problems. If you had a cesarean birth, you may need to have your checkup sooner.

General Physical Examination

This part of the checkup includes:

Measuring your weight. A woman usually returns to her prepregnancy weight about 6 months after delivery. The postpartum period is not a good time to diet. Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet low in fat. For more information on weight loss after having a baby, talk to your health care professional, who can advise you on the best way to lose weight. Taking your blood pressure. During pregnancy, your blood pressure may increase. By the end of the sixth week after delivery, your blood pressure usually returns to its prepregnancy level. Examining your breasts. It is important to have your breasts checked for lumps and nipple problems. Your health care professional can show you how to check your breasts. Breast self-examination is important to do every month. If you are bottle-feeding, your breasts will usually return to their normal shape and size in 4 to 6 weeks. You still need to check your breasts regularly for any changes. If you are breastfeeding, your breasts still may be full and feel firm by the sixth week. Checking your breasts daily for lumps or plugged ducts can help prevent problems with discomfort or infection. Examining your abdominal incision. If you had a cesarean birth or your tubes were cut or tied, you have an incision. Your health care professional will check your incision to make sure healing is complete.
Pelvic Examination

This part of the checkup is an internal examination to check the health of your ovaries, uterus (womb), cervix (opening into the womb) and vagina (birth canal). Your health care professional also will check your perineum (area around the birth canal) for healing. The first part is checking your perineum. Your health care professional will examine the areas around the vagina, urethra (opening of the bladder) and rectum for healing. The second part of the internal examination is checking your vagina and cervix. Your health care professional will use a speculum to allow a visual inspection of the vagina and cervix. The last part of the examination is checking your uterus and ovaries. Your health care professional will feel the shape and size of both. Vaginal bleeding, or lochia, usually stops in the first 4 to 6 weeks postpartum. Bleeding that begins one month after delivery is usually your period.

Questions and Answers

After the examinations, your health care professional will tell you if your body is healing properly after childbirth. This is a good time to ask questions. You may be wondering about returning to work, exercising, birth-control methods or general health concerns. Write your questions on paper and take them with you to your appointment. Review them with your health care professional.

Cow's Milk and Constipation in Children

!±8± Cow's Milk and Constipation in Children

Cow's Milk: Cause Of Constipation?

I did not associate cow's milk consumption with constipation until this week. My daughter started complaining of stomach cramps and this went on for four days. She would crumple up in agony. It was very strange because there was no vomiting or diarrhea and she hadn't eaten anything unusual or that she was allergic to. Or so I thought.

I drink milk myself, and it tends to have a laxative effect on me. It was only after a trip to the local GP and another to the hospital that I learned the cause of her trouble might be cow's milk. Apparently, cow's milk may cause constipation in young children.

The connection never occurred to me because I thought milk would have a laxative effect rather than the reverse. After all, this is what happens with me. I thought if my daughter was at all intolerant to milk, it should manifest as diarrhea instead of constipation.

Evidence Of Link Between Cow's Milk And Constipation

I researched the subject and came across an interesting study done at a university in Italy in 1998. It involved 65 children with chronic constipation who had been prescribed laxatives after dietary changes had failed to cure the constipation. Each child received either cow's milk or soy milk for two weeks, had a rest week, then for the next two weeks had the other milk that they didn't get the first time. When the results were analyzed, it was discovered that while they were on soy milk, 68% of the children were no longer constipated. In contrast, their conditions remained the same when they were on cow's milk.

Dr Alan Greene of DrGreene.com suggests that it could be the protein in cow's milk that is at the root of the problem, and that switching to soy milk can dramatically improve the quality of life of a child suffering chronic constipation.

Preventing Constipation

Switching to a dairy-free alternative is a relatively simple and inexpensive way to treat a constipation issue.

What about preventing constipation? Besides ensuring the child has enough fibre and fluids in her diet and gets enough exercise, is there anything else a parent can do?

Research has shown that probiotics, those friendly bacteria that prevent harmful microorganisms from building up in the body and poisoning it, can help prevent constipation by aiding in the proper digestion of food and nutrients and maintaining a healthy ratio of good to bad intestinal bacteria in the gut. Probiotics are also useful for rebuilding immunity that has been compromised by long-term use of antibiotics. This is something parents want to watch out for, especially in Western cultures which endorse the liberal prescription of antibiotics for all sorts of ailments.

If your child has no major digestive health issues, good for you! Keep her that way for as long as you can with a fibre-rich diet, lots of exercise and a good quality probiotic supplement.

If your child suffers chronic constipation, then you may want to experiment by simply switching her to a non-dairy diet.
